The golden decades of the 50s and 60s saw the emergence of the counterculture movement. Be it artistic, cultural, or political, the rise of avant-garde and alternative ideas spawned radical changes that challenged the status quo and influenced the succeeding generations.

One of the hubs of these movements is the neighborhood in Lower Manhattan in New York City ? Greenwich Village. Established in early 16th century as a rural village, the village came to be known as the bohemian capital during the late 19th to mid 20th century. The neighborhood became popular as refuge for artists, writers, performers, musicians, painters and poets. Many progressive ideas such as the ones espoused by the ?Beat? movement originated from Greenwich Village.

The neighborhood?s historical and cultural significance made it a National Historic District in 1979. At present, the neighborhood retains some of its bohemian legacy through the numerous art galleries, theaters and artists? nooks found here.
