The Macy?s Department Store in New York City is not only the biggest department store in the world, but arguably the most well-known as well. This mammoth of a retail space started from the dream of Rowland Hussey Macy. He opened what he called a ?fancy dry goods? store at 6th Avenue in 1858. And of course, the rest is as they say, history, and the humongous red star emblem has been iconic.
Macy?s Department Store has been synonymous with New York and American fashion and has changed the history of fashion retailing forever. It pioneered many initiatives in the retail fashion business and these efforts did not go unnoticed. New Yorkers constantly trek to Macy?s Department Store to experience the best shopping experience.
Macy?s Department Store was initially called R.H. Macy Co. and in 1862, it was the very first fashion retail establishment which featured an in-store Santa Claus during Christmas. Macy also started the practice of dressing up store windows with large displays to draw in customer or lure passers-by go inside the store and maybe purchase something from its beautiful items. He also made news when an unprecedented promotion of a woman retail executive to store manager happened through his initiative.
In 1902, Macy?s Department Store has grown so big that the need to move to a more spacious place was a must. The current location, the Beaux Arts structure at Herald Square and 34th was constructed in three phases. According to Bob Rutan, Macy?s archivist, the first section to be built was ? of a block from Broadway leading to 7th Avenue. The next section was the storefronts along 7th Avenue and was finished in 1924. Completing the store were the new storefronts along 7th Avenue replacing the storefronts previously mentioned and was finished in 1938.
The expansion of the department store encountered a challenge when the owner of a modest five-level structure did not heed to the offer of Macy?s to purchase the property. As a compromise, Macy?s opted to construct around the building. This is what you see as the larger-than-life Macy?s shopping bag in the store?s fa?ade, but in actuality, this is not Macy?s property and a different structure and store altogether.
Macy?s set the record as the largest department store in the entire globe in 1924 and still holds the title. It is truly a shopping paradise with ten floors of retail nirvana offering almost one million items. Aside from the beautiful items, Macy?s features other attractions such as the grand statues which welcome store guests as well as the Christmas displays which feature a famous yuletide story.
Aside from the department store, Macy?s is also known for its strong ties with the yearly Thanksgiving Day Parade. The annual event started in 1924 as a sales initiative to attract more customers to the store and was originally known as the Christmas parade. Another annual festivity that Macy?s spearheads is the Spring Flower Show already running for several years. During the celebration, the department store comes to life with vibrant spring colors.
