The Morgan Library and Museum is a global institution that promotes artifacts and items with historical significance, collects manuscripts and rare books, drawings, music, and other works of art. The institution seeks to promote, preserve, study, interpret, and educate the young minds and the general public through these exhibits and rare collections of the past life.

The birth of the library and museum is attributed to the Pierpont Morgan, an influential banker and collector of his time. The museum was launched in 1890 by the financer to showcase his private collections - his rare collections, manuscripts, prints, drawings, and ancient artifacts. The American financier was neither a scholar nor a connoisseur, but he was fond of collecting rare items and showed interests in books, manuscripts, and a few historical and literary autographs. Because of his love for books, he opened a library that consisted mostly of his book collections, standard leather-bound classics, reference collection of art and literary and historical manuscripts.

His collection of art and books grew over the years and commissioned an architect firm to construct a separate building to have more space of his collections. With the place so big, he hired a librarian and continued on his quest to collect volumes of books, manuscripts and other rare art collections until his death in 1913.

Jack Morgan, the new owner of Morgan estate, made the decision to donate some portions of his father?s collections to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Wadsworth Atheneaum in Hartford, except for the collections of books, manuscripts, and drawings.

In 192, Morgan decided to transfer ownership of his father?s remaining collections to a board of trustees and make a public institution with a $1.5 million endowment. The trust was to be utilized for research, opening a gallery of art, and other activities that will benefit the trustees? desires. Years later, the institution became a public library and was named the Morgan Library and Museum.
