The Statue of Liberty is one of, if not the most popular icons of the United States. The statue arrived in the New York Harbour in June 1885 which was transported onboard the French frigate ?Isere?. It was a present given by the French government to the American people in honour of the alliance between the two governments during the American Revolution. The statue itself was built by the French people while the pedestal was created by the Americans and the two components were pieced in the US.

Standing 111 feet and 6 inches tall with a waistline of 35 feet, she (the statue) welcomed new immigrants arriving to the United States through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954. Ellis is now known as the Liberty Island.

The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of international friendship but has also evolved to symbolize freedom and democracy.
