Cape Hatteras is dangerous for sailing as frequent storms occurs in the area. So many ships have been lost off Cape Hatteras and it was known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic”. The cape is also infamous for being recurrently struck by hurricanes that shift to East Coast of the United States. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest and famous symbol of North Carolina. The beacon can be seen 20 miles out of the sea and warned sailors for more than 100 years.


Cape Hatteras offers different activities such as surfing and wind boarding. It is both popular in several Outer Banks location in Cape Hatteras. Equipments can be rented or purchase locally. Swimming is also known to be an activity in the area. The sound is low and is not strong currents except around the inlets. Lastly, trails and hiking is another popular doing, few self-guided trails are within the area. While for longer hiking it can be taken along the barriers at Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge and North Carolina Mountains which runs through the seashores.
