The CSS Neuse State Historic Site is a historic area in Kinston, North Carolina. It features displays and information telling of two American wars in one place.
The CSS Neuse State Historic Site features the area where the remnants of the historic CSS Neuse, one of the 22 ironclad gunboats of the Confederate Navy, can be found and seen up close. These historic war vehicles are actually quite rare, as there is only three of existence today. The CSS Neuse was commissioned in 1864 and was grounded off Kinston. It was burned by the Confederates in 1865 so they could escape Gen. William T. Sherman?s impending capture of them.
Located on the banks of the Neuse River, the CSS Neuse State Historic Site is also the home of the Governor Richard Caswell Memorial, a biographical museum focused on the life and career of Gov. Caswell, NC?s first elected governor.
