The Roanoke Colony was established in 1587. It was a failed attempt at establishing a colony in the North America, despite the promotion and leadership of the famous Englishman Sir Walter Raleigh. Today, the site is known as the Fort Raleigh Historic Site, a public park established by the National Park Service in 1941 in commemoration of its great historical significance. It is also the home of the Elizabethan Gardens, which was built as a memorial of the first colonists of the area.
