The George Clayton Shaw Museum is a commemoration to the illustrious life of Dr. and Mrs. Shaw. Dr. George Clayton Shaw was the founder of the Mary Potter Academy and the museum was originally his residence during his time. Shaw and his wife had vital roles in the realization the visions and educations of Negroes in the South.

The structure was constructed by Mr. Thomas L. Hicks, the master builder and instructor in the Industrial Arts Department of the school in 1921

Today, the George Clayton Shaw Museum provides a visual and historical setting to stimulate the interests of the visitors in education by acquiring, preserving, and restoring the furniture, artifacts, and other documents that detail the legacy of Dr. George Clayton Shaw. It also serves as a venue for appreciating cultural endeavors.
