The Hickory History Center is both a local history museum and a historic house museum. The site presents the historic Harper House and the Bonniwell-Lyerly House as its main attractions, two very beautiful mansions in the city.

The Harper House was built in 1887 by Daniel Webster Shuler, the founder of the city?s first bank. It was named after the Harper family who was the last residents of the property. The Bonniwell-Lyerly House, on the other hand, was built in 1912. Both homes are noted for their architecture, as well as their former residents who have contributed a lot to the city?s development. Both homes are recently restored and preserved. They also feature interpretive displays about the city?s history under the supervision of the Hickory History Center.
