The Mattamuskeet Lodge is a historic building in Swanquarter, North Carolina. It is considered as the focal point in the Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge.
The Mattamuskeet Lodge was originally a pump station designed to drain the Mattamuskeet Lake. Upon its completion in 1915, it became the world?s largest pumping station with four steam powered pumps and the ability to move 1.2 million gallons of water per minute. Sadly, it was abandoned years later, after the concept behind its operation proved to be too costly and impractical.
By the 1930s, the area was acquired by the government and transformed to a waterfowl sanctuary. The pump station was made into a hunting lodge. It operated until 1974 and was abandoned, only to be used occasionally. Today, it is under renovation, but public access is allowed in its grounds.
