The Stanly House is a historic home in New Bern, North Carolina. It tells of the life and times of the Stanly family, headed by John Wright Stanly, the prominent businessman who had the house built in the early 1780s.
The Stanly House is a living testimony of the grand life that New Bern had once during the 1700s. The house was so stately that it was even used to accommodate President Washington while he was in town.
Aside from the house, the Stanly family is also an interesting part of the tale. John Wright Stanly and his wife may have died early, but his legacy remained with his kids. He even had a son out of wedlock, John Carruthers Stanly, with an enslaved African woman from the Ebo tribe. The Stewart family helped John C. Stanly to get out of slavery, and he also got most of his family out of it. He also became quite wealthy himself, owning a number of slaves, making things quite ironic.
