Camp Sheardown is an important part of the early history of the State of North Dakota. This Valley City site is the location of the campsite used by the famous Sibley Expedition, which was part of the effort to subdue the Dakota Indians, who were engaging in raids against nearby towns. The camp is named for Dr. Samuel Sheardown, who served as a medical surgeon for the 10th Minnesota Infantry, which was part of the expedition.

Today, a small bronze tablet, which chronicles the events during the camp?s time, serves as an initial marker. From here on, visitors can follow the trail the soldiers took for their march. The end of the trail leads to a small river where the troops momentarily settled before continuing on.
