The Chahinkapa Zoo lies along the Red River banks. It provides a veritable paradise for waterfowl, song birds, and the wildlife. With Chahinkapa, meaning ?end of the woods,? the zoo was named by early Native American settlers. It was the meeting place of Indians who organized summer camps for bison hunting.

In the 1960?s, the zoo was moved to its current 18 acre location. The Chahinkapa Zoo Association was then formed in 1974 for the development of the renovation and improvement plans. It was only in 1984 when the 5-year plan was finalized. It focused on having a clean and green theme that incorporates community support.

Today, The Chahinkapa Zoo houses more than 200 animals that represent 70 species and 6 continents. These include grizzly bears, black vultures, chinchillas, alpaca, ringtailed lemur, fossa, snow leopard, Russian tortoise, red kangaroos, and many more.
