North Dakota?s history shows that people from this region are descendants of Scandinavian immigrants who moved to the prairies around the 1870s. This has led them to believe that they could have Viking ancestors.
True to the Viking tradition is the story of the Hilltop Viking Statue?s creation. Built in 1972, one local built the monument and dragged it up a steep hill that would be difficult to climb, even if you?re not carrying anything. The feat is surely a commemoration of this ancient culture?s heritage.
The Hilltop Viking Statue is made of wire mesh and heavy fiber tape and is painted in black. It has successfully weathered through the harsh outdoor elements, although, it clearly needs some repairs and maintenance.
