The zoo itself is located in the Avondale neighborhood and has actively supported everything from breeding programs to the protection and conservation of wildlife. The zoo animals that are kept and protected in the zoo come in various shape, sizes and forms. Mammals that are kept in the zoo include armadillos, vampire bats and giant fruit bats, bears such as polar bears, American Black Bears and Spectacled bears, there are also big cats on display in the Cincinnati Zoo including African lions, Siberian Lynx, southern Brazilian Ocelot, white tigers, snow leopards, Ocelot, cougar and Malayan Tiger.

In 1882, the zoo also managed to breed its first American Bison that was born and raised in captivity. To better improve their breeding technology the zoo started the Carl H. Lindner Jr. Family Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife or CREW. CREW has also been responsible for maintaining the Frozen Zoo which contains over 2,500 specimens of 65 plant species and 60 animals.
