Dr. Bob’s home is famous for being the birthplace of Alcoholics Anonymous. Stockbroker Bill W. from New York went to Akron on May 12, 1935 to attend a shareholders meeting. A fight broke out and it did not turn out the way he wanted it to. As he struggled to fight his sobriety, he uttered the words, “I’ve got to find another alcoholic.”

From the home’s upstairs room, the two men started helping alcoholics one by one. It had definitely served as an important site in the early years of AA. Recovering alcoholics were welcomed into the house until they become recovered enough to be independent.

Today, the home is flocked by thousands of visitors who want to see where the AA program was born and feel certain closeness to the two men who were able to overcome their alcohol dependency to be able to help others.
