The Lucy Hayes Heritage Center is the birthplace of Lucy Webb Hayes, the wife of the 19th United States President Rutherford B. Hayes, who is from Ohio.

She was born in the house on August 28, 1831. Lucy attended Miss Baskerville?s School on West Second Street and earned her reputation for being a compassionate person. The third child of Dr. James & Maria Cook Webb, she married Rutherford B. Hayes, who was an attorney back then, on December 30, 1852. It was said that her kindness, great moral courage, and deep religious principles made a huge impact and contribution to the success of her husband, who became President of the United States from 877-1881.

She was the first person the press called ?The First Lady.? She was known for being against the use of alcohol within the White House and being so, she was bestowed with the name, "Lemonade Lucy.?

The Lucy Hayes Heritage Center is open for tours from April thru September, from Monday to Saturday, 1 pm to 4pm.
