Fort Gibson has been recognized as one of Oklahoma's historical landmarks because it functioned as the point of origin for the military expeditions aiming to bring peace to regional tribes.
It was mostly inhabited during the Indian Removal Period but was later on abandoned in 1857. It was the Civil War that got it reactivated. During this time, outlaws and squatters were prevented as the army maintained it as their settlement throughout the Reconstruction and Indian Periods. However, in the year 1890, it was abandoned for the last time.
Currently, it serves as a landmark open to the public. Reconstructions of the log forts and original buildings dating way back from 1840 can be seen. This historical site also provides a venue for some certain annual historical programs and events.
