Water is considered as the greatest natural element. So, when man tries to contain it, the outcome is simply amazing. Physics-freaks who come to visit Pensacola Dam may be fascinated by the great scientific minds that created it. But for regular visitors, its gigantic size is enough to leave them awestruck. Standing as high as 150 feet over the Grand Lake riverbed, this dam is the first hydroelectric facility ever built in Oklahoma. Constructed and managed by the Grand River Dam Authority or GRDA, the Pensacola Dam was built in 1938 to 1940, during the depression era. It spans a long mile through the Grand River Valley and holds back water of up to 43,500 acres. It can generate an estimated capacity of 120 Megawatts.
