The Champoeg State Heritage Area features the old town of Champoeg, in the state of Oregon. This town was established in the 1840s and played a huge role in the development of the area. It even served as the site of the very first provisional government of the Oregon Country.

Located in between Salem and Oregon City, the site was actually a strategic location for the formation of the unity of the early settlements. It became the meeting place during the 1840s, something it is still very famous for today.

The town of Champoeg was abandoned after the catastrophic flood of 1861. Today, it is a ghost town preserved as the Champoeg State Heritage Area, which is also the site of the Champoeg State Park Historic Archaeological District.
