Also commonly referred to as the Chemawa High School, the Chemawa Indian School is a boarding school for Native Americans opened in 1880. It was initially an elementary school upon establishment, and then offered high school levels later on.

The Chemawa Indian School is noted for being the oldest Indian boarding school that?s still in operation today. It changed its name a couple of times in the past as well, calling itself the United States Indian Training and Normal School, Harrison Institute, and Salem Indian Industrial and Training School at various times.

Five structures in the Chemawa Indian School complex are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, for both their architectural significance, as well as their great participation in the history of the Native Americans.

Chemawa Indian School?s notable alumni include Spade Cooley and Bob Greene.
