The Columbia River Highway is the first planned scenic roadway in the US, built for almost a decade, from 1913 to 1922. It was constructed through the Columbia River Gorge and offers an excellent view of its surroundings.
Spanning 75 miles, the Columbia River Highway offers a lot more by being a destination in itself. It was declared as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers, as well as a National Historic Landmark. It was creatively fashioned after the scenic highways of Europe.
Considered as an “All-American Road” by the US Secretary of Transportation, the Columbia River Highway is also called the Historic Columbia River Highway No. 100 and is a part of the National Scenic Byways.
