The Francis Ermatinger House is the oldest house in Clackamas County in the state of Oregon. It was built in 1845 in the Greek Revival style by the Hudson’s Bay Company employee, Francis Ermatinger. Ermatinger took residence in Oregon City after the company moved its operations away from the area in 1845. The house was originally erected by the Willamette River but was moved twice.
But what really made the Francis Ermatinger House a historic site is the fact that this is where the name of the city of Portland, Oregon was decided. This is where the infamous coin toss between Asa Lovejoy and Francis Pettygrove took place in 1845 where Pettygrove won two out of three tosses, allowing him to name Portland as such, after his hometown in Maine.
The Francis Ermatinger House is now open as a museum.
