Just a few minutes away from the city of Cave Junction?s central business district is the Illinois Valley Airport. It is a county-owned, public use airport that is also known as the Cave Junction Airport or the Siskiyou Smokejumper Base.
Built in 1943 as a smokejumper base by the US Forest Service, the Illinois Valley Airport is now a fully functioning venue of such, which is also home to 22 aircrafts. It stopped being a smokejumper base in 1981 after seeing up to 142 jumps yearly.
The Illinois Valley Airport boasts of 175 acres of land area. In 2006, it saw 6000 aircraft operations in its property. It also boasts of having two ?Moon Trees? on the site, although, both died when the smokejumpers vacated the area.
