Composed of more than nineteen thousand acres of wilderness is the Monument Rock Wilderness Area in the eastern part of Oregon. The site is inside parts of the Wallowa-Whitman and Malheur National Forests, and is under the governance of the US Forest Service.
The Monument Rock Wilderness was declared a wilderness area in 1984 by the US Congress in a move to protect specific areas from anything that could harm its pristine condition. So far, there has been 9 million acres worth of land declared as federal wilderness areas all over the United States since its inception in 1964.
The Monument Rock Wilderness offers a wide array of activities. Hunting is a popular sport around with its abundance of big game. Hiking, however, is still the most popular of all, with its 15 miles worth or trails.
