The sandbank of southern Oregon coast is the Pistol River State Park that is supposedly named after a militia soldier that lost his pistol in the river during the notorious Rogue River Indian War. The crucial battle was in March 1856. The dunes and river that nourish the area makes it unique. The mound actually grows during spring and summer season. The coast receives plentiful rainfall, mostly between the months of October and April. By August it brings the best clear days. As it changes its course from time to time the pothole ponds attracts shorebirds and waterfowl. It is an admirable birding spot. Pistol River State Park is a windsurfing location that has been held for three years in a row to conduct national championships.

Pistol River State Park is scenic coastal areas that have an easy access to the beaches, chance to do picnicking, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, windsurfing, swimming, viewing marine wildlife and viewing scenery. The beaches and sea stacks are amazing.
