The Sumpter Museum is located in one of the historic buildings in Sumpter, the Sumpter Supply. It was built in 1899 and it served as a Mercantile until the 1917 fire. The building was untouched by the fire and it later served as a Tavern, Liquor Store, Grocery, Gas Station, and Auto Repair Shop. For 6 years, the building was empty as it was under disrepair. Eventually, it was donated to the city as a Museum in perpetuity. The adjacent property that was donated with it was sold in order to bring in the funds for the building?s restoration.
Today, it contains a Photographic Archive and collections that surfaced through grants and donations. It houses many significant artifacts that are related to the history of Sumter. Since Sumpter is considered a historic gold mining town, the museum also interprets Sumpter Valley logging, the Sumpter Valley Narrow Gauge Railway, and the Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge. The Museum also has its own library.
