Located in the northeastern part of the Malheur National Forest is the Vinegar Hill-Indian Rock Scenic Area. It is basically a beautiful, high elevation spot in the national forest, providing magnificent views of the John Day River, Strawberry Mountain Wilderness, and the North Fork John Day Wilderness.

The Vinegar Hill-Indian Rock Scenic area is rich with numerous species of flora, including the alpine wildflower in the western regions of the Rocky Mountains. Fauna, such as upland birds and big game species, are also fairly common around the site.

The site also boasts of having a rich mining and geologic past, so interesting rock formations of granite, basalt, shales, and rhyolite can be seen around. Mining village remnants can also be found in the area.
