The Washington Park started out as the ?City Park? in the 1870s, after the first 40 acres of land were bought by the city government from Amos King. Its first keeper, Charles M. Meyers, did most of the initial work, tending and developing the site, despite having no background in landscaping. He only drew inspirations from the memories of the parks in Europe and his native Germany.

Most of what are seen today can be attributed, however, to the Olmsted brother, John Charles. He tweaked the initial design and improved Washington Park overall. Later on, the site was expanded when the nearby poor farm closed down.

Today, the Washington Park is still a well known urban park. It features a zoo, amphitheatre, arboretum, and archery range. It is also rich with gardens, tennis courts, museums, playgrounds, and public art.
