Chitwood was once a booming logging locale where people flocked to for its growing industry. This is one of the reasons why the Yaquina River Covered Bridge was built in the first place. It was formerly surrounded by a bustling community. The passenger train from Yaquina to Corvallis also used to stop at Chitwood, sadly, it no longer does so anymore.

The Yaquina Covered Bridge is one of the last remaining structures of the old community. It was restored in 1982 under the initiative of the Lincoln County. It awarded the rehabilitation contract to the Aubrey Mountain Construction who completed the work in 1983. By January 1986, the bridge was rededicated. The event included a recitation of the area?s colorful history as well as a parade of vintage cars.
