The City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, is a city rich with culture and history. One of the city’s cultural institutions that are still standing today is the American Academy of Music.

Also known simply as Academy of Music, this concert hall and opera house was built in 1857. Since its foundation, this Renaissance-styled building is the oldest opera house in United States. It is affectionately called the “Grand Old Lady of Broad Street”. This building is the home of the Opera Company of Philadelphia and the Pennsylvania Ballet. The Academy was also home to the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1900 to 2001.

The Academy has hosted many world-class performances from great artists around the world, such as Luciano Pavarotti, Igor Stravinsky and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Because of its historic and cultural importance, the Academy was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1962.
