After a series of other structures that have deteriorated and got destroyed, today?s Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail is the third of what was built in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Its construction was started in 1884 and was finished in 1886.

Today?s Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail is made in Romanesque style architecture, designed primarily by the famous HH Richardson. Its design was so magnificent that it has inspired many other structures in the country. It even ranked the highest among other courthouses in the US, except from the US Supreme Court in one architectural survey conducted in 2007.

The Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. It is also a noted structure by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation.
