Mahanoy City in Pennsylvania was once a major center for anthracite coal mining back in the mid 1800s. Working conditions and the employers were extremely harsh at the time, which lead to the union organizing of the Irish miners. Things got worse and a band of men, known as the ?Molly Maguire? became quite prominent in the strike and even did some violent acts to get their protests through. Later on, investigations were held and found ten men guilty of being a Maguire. They were hanged as a punishment to being vigilantes.

This part of Pennsylvania?s history was the very inspiration of the artist ZenosFrudakis in creating the Hooded Man Statue in the Molly Maguire Historic Park in Mahanoy City. The work itself is made of black granite, depicting a hooded man with bound hands and feet who is about to be hanged.
