The presence of the Pennsylvania State Capitol can stop any passerby in his tracks and make him look in amazement at the magnificence of this edifice. For the uninitiated, he won?t think that this palace-looking building is actually the seat of the government of the state of Pennsylvania.

Located at the capital city of Harrisburg, this Renaissance Revival-styled building evokes the grandeur of Europe. Completed in 1906, this 272-foot high capitol was made of Vermont granite. Its prominent dome was adorned with gilded brass and topped with the statue of ?Commonwealth?, commonwealth government?s human form. The capital is often described as the ?palace of art? because of its museum-like collection of artworks such as murals, sculptures, and stained-glass windows.

The capitol houses the offices of the Pennsylvania General Assembly and the city chambers of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. The capitol was recently declared a National Historic Landmark in 2006.
