The Staple Bend Tunnel is the first railway tunnel ever built in the United States. It is located in a town named Mineral Point in Pennsylvania. The construction of the tunnel began in April of 1831 and was completed two years later in June of 1833. It was designed for the Allegheny Portage Railroad. In 1994, the said tunnel was recognized as a National Historical Landmark and became a part of National Historic Site of Allegheny Portage Railroad in 2001.

Almost half of the budget spent for the tunnel went for the design of its entrance. It was inspired by Roman architecture and was meant to attract travelers and visitors. Visitors are not allowed to bring any kind of motorized vehicles except for a bicycle to trek the 2-mile long tunnel.
