The EL Yunque National Forest is a 28,000 acre wide forest land that has a significant natural, as well as historical value. For one, it is the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System (with Puerto Rico being a US Territory). It is also one of Western Hemisphere?s oldest reserves.
Formerly named the Luquillo National Forest (1903) and the Caribbean National Forest (1935), it is the home to a very rich flora and fauna. 23 species of trees and plants are also indigenous here, including the Puerto Rican Amazon.
In 1996, the El Portal Rain Forest Center was opened inside the El Yunque National Forest. It was serves as an introductory hub to the forest where visitors can have a good look at the wildlife.
