Isla de Culebra is located 17 miles east of Puerto Rico, an island paradise dubbed as ?Isla Chiquita? or small island, and ?Ultima Virgen? or the last virgin. The island's fine, white sands and clear, blue water has earned its reputation as a tourist haven. Culebra's 2000 residents offer hospitality to visitors: another big plus point for this island. One will never get enough of the unlimited sun, sand and sea that this Puerto Rican wonderland offers.

Culebra was officially made a point in the map when Spaniard Don Cayetano Escudero colonized the island on October 27, 1880. Before this date, Tainos and Arawaks occupied the island during the pre-Columbian era. In 1875, Stevens, a black Englishman, was authorized as governor by the Vieques, Puerto Rico government to guard the local fishing industry from foreigners. On August 2, 1891, Don Cayetano Escudero became the first Delegate of Culebra. He was also appointed by the Vieques administration. By then, the island was called ?Isla Pasaje? and ?Isla de San Idelfonso?. The latter was named in honor of Bishop San Idelfonso de la Culebra.

Today, Culebra is a bustling tourist hotspot. Apart from the beautiful Culebra shoreline, the surrounding cays and islands provide year-round beach and nature fun for tourists. The biggest cay near Culebra, Culebrita, is home to the oldest working lighthouse in the Caribbean. This lighthouse, built in 1886, still stands today and continues to guide ships home. The lighthouse is currently registered in National Register of Historical Monuments of the United States. Snorkeling is also made possible thanks to the majestic coral reef on the southwestern side of the Luis Pe?a cay. Turtle watching is also another past time, as well as kayaking, climbing, scuba diving and kite surfing. Culebra does not offer night life -- because the island only wants to give tourists a relaxing, memorable visit to nature.
