Newport, Rhode Island is best known for its abundance in old mansions. This is why it has three National Historic Landmark Districts. One of the most notable structures, however, is the Belcourt Castle. A 60-room summer villa that is constructed for the then bachelor Oliver Belmont in 1894, the total costs of building the mansion came up to $3.2 million, which is around $65 million today.
Belcourt Castle has been the host of the country’s very first automobile parade in 1899. It was also slated to be an antique auto museum and a venue for the Newport Jazz Festival, although the conditions weren’t exactly in favor to such attempts. Today, it has already been transformed into a museum that is open to the public.
