The Lippitt Mills Complex can trace back its manufacturing roots from 1737. Joseph Edmonds started a gristmill on the area, which was later on sold to Charles and Christopher Lippiitt, along with the land and privilege. This was the start of the Lippitt Manufacturing Company that was officially established in 1810.

The Lippitt Mills Complex is composed of a variety of structures dating back to the 18th century. The mill became one of Rhode Island?s first textile mills. It is most notable for having wooden structures, giving it a real traditional feel to it.

The Lippitt Mills Complex is believed to be the oldest textile mill in the United States that is still used for manufacturing products today. It has been listed to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
