Although built in the late 1800s for Frederick William Vanderbilt, Rough Point is best known today for being the Newport home of the philanthropist, heiress, and art collector, Doris Duke. Today, it serves as a museum for her life, showcasing her art collections and life works.

Inside Rough Point, visitors can find the things that she has amassed on her world travels. There are antiques and prized paintings, as well as jewelry, ceramics, and the chandeliers made of rough cut natural crystal. Exhibits are also held, with themes varying every year.

Guided tours are usually held for visitors of Rough Point for small groups of only 12-14 folks per tour. There?s no gift shop on site, though, as Duke herself found such stores to be of ?bad taste?.
