Famous for serving as the prototype of what people know today as the Shingle Style architecture, the William Watts Sherman House is a historic landmark, being a contributing property to the Bellevue Avenue Historic District.

The house was designed by the world renowned HH Richardson for William Watts Sherman, a partner of the New York Duncan, Sherman, & Co. banking firm, and his then wife, the daughter of the owner of the neighboring Chateau-sur-Mer, Annie Derby Rodgers Wetmore. For a lack of a better term to describe the house, builders dubbed the mansion?s architectural style to be of the Queen Anne motif.

The house was altered and renovated a couple of times in the past. However, most of its essential parts and features were kept intact, so its integrity is still guaranteed. It is now owned by Salve Regina University.
