Built in 1942, the American Theater was built as the premiere movie house in Charleston, South Carolina. It is an excellent example of the Art Moderne style of architecture, making it more remarkable. It is located in the historic downtown of Charleston, right along with the Garden and Riviera Theaters.

The American Theater is now mostly an events venue. It is a choice location for post movie premieres and other related events that could involve red carpets and dazzling marquees. With its classic look, it was chosen as a backdrop for the major motion picture, The Notebook.

For 2011, the American Theater will be hosting the 4th Annual Charleston International Film Festival. Maybe you want to schedule your visit around that time.
