The Barnwells are some of the most powerful and influential families in Beaufort back in the 18th and 19th centuries. They have contributed a lot to the city of Beaufort and even to South Carolina, with all of their connections and wealth. However, one of the most interesting characters in the family is Elizabeth Barnwell-Gough.

Elizabeth Barnwell-Gough is quite a lady. She eloped with Robert Gough and then ran away from him, due to, as most people speculate, his ill temper. She later became quite a matriarch, raising her daughter as well as other nephews and even grand kids. Her house, built in 1789, is equally as interesting as well. It is even touted to have the history of Beaufort among its walls.
