The Beaufort Arsenal stands as a reminder of the city’s strength. It is one of the most celebrated historic sites in the area, mostly because it is the home of one of the oldest military groups in the United States, the Beaufort Volunteer Artillery.

Built in 1795, it has seen quite a number of wars over the centuries of its existence. It was used by a volunteer company during the Revolutionary War and also saw action during the Civil War years as proven by the canons dating back to the mid 1800s located on the site.

Currently functioning as the Beaufort Arsenal Museum under the management of the Historic Beaufort Foundation, the site displays a good number of artifacts that are not only about the past wars, but also about the early industry and natural setting of the area.
