About 1873, the historic building of Cohasett was built in Hampton County, South Carolina. It was for William James Gooding, a local farmer who cultivated oats, rice and cotton among others, and a politician in the Beaufort District. He held many offices in the area including being a sheriff and county treasurer for the Beaufort and Hampton counties.

The Cohasett is a two-story weatherboarded I-house. They used pinewood in constructing the building, most materials were from the owners sawmill. For those who are interested in its architecture, its first floor plans are available online.

The Cohasett was Golding?s home in north eastern Hampton County. It was added on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 mostly for its architecture, being a brilliant example of a 19th century Carolina I-house.
