The Joseph H. Rainey House is a historic house in Georgetown, South Carolina, notable for its association with the United States? first African American Congressman, Joseph H. Rainey. Being a former slave who managed to rise to the social ladder, Rainey?s story is really something inspiring and has a big impact on history.

In 1832, Joseph H. Rainey was born in this house in Prince Street, Georgetown. He was born to a slave family, but was later freed when his parents was able to buy their own freedom. The Joseph H. Rainey House also served as Rainey?s district headquarters when he was running for office. It was also where he lived while the Congress was on recess.

The Joseph H. Rainey House was declared as a National Historic Landmark in 1984.
