Built in 1676 by Ann and Thomas Drayton, the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens used to only be a small formal garden in the couple’s property. Now, after 15 generations, the Draytons still manage and care for the property. It can be found next to the Drayton Hall which was built almost a century later.

The Magnolia Plantation and Gardens used to be a rice plantation. Its gardens became popular when Reverend John Grimke Drayton inherited it in the 1840s and developed the gardens. According to some, he worked hard on the English garden, so he can convince his wife to move from Philadelphia to South Carolina.

Today, the plantation serves as a tourist attraction in Charleston. It is open daily for public tours and private events.
