Millwood is currently the ruins of what once was a plantation house built circa 1830 by the Hampton family. The site is known for being the home of Revolutionary War Colonel Wade Hampton II and the boyhood home of Senator Wade Hampton III, a Confederate general, and former South Carolina and US Senator. It was believed to have been burned around 1865, by the Union troops under General Sherman.

The Millwood is a historically significant site mostly for its relation with the abovementioned men. The two were descendants of Wade Hampton I, who is considered as one of the wealthiest men in America while he was still alive. The site itself also became the social center of the state, since it was owned by such prominent political figures.
