The Oconee Station State Historic Site is a 1760 blockhouse built by the British troops. The station was deemed necessary to mark the farthest area in South Carolina where white settlers ventured before the American Revolution. It was also a way to protect the settlers from the Cherokee attacks that were common back in those days.

The Oconee Station State Historic Site is also where you can find the Williams Richards House, another historic building notable for being the early 1800s trading post for the area. It is said that it was used by the Indians as well, and as a residence and fur storage later on.

Today, the Oconee Station State Historic Site is a public venue where visitors can learn more about the local history and have fun at the same time. It has a short spur trail to the Station Cove Falls and the passage to the Palmetto Trail.
