Also known as The Oaks, the Paul Hamilton House is a historic building in the city of Beaufort, South Carolina. It was built around 1855 by Paul Hamilton and wife just before the Civil War. It got its nickname from its setting, as the house is in the midst of magnificent oak trees, shading the lot from the blaze of the sun.

The Paul Hamilton House has quite a story. Just like most properties in the area, it was confiscated during the Civil War and used as a Union hospital. When the war ended, the owners were given the option buy their properties back, although, the mechanics are very tricky. Hamilton wanted to reacquire the house just because he doesn?t want it to become a ?school for Negroes?. A settlement was already in place, but for some reason, the original plan for the purchase was changed. Instead of waiting for three days, the auction date was moved earlier, leaving no time for Hamilton to adjust. The locals, however, helped in the reacquisition buy raising money and buying it for him.
